The Conjuring: Last rites is the fourth and final film in the Conjuring franchise where, it is revealed in the plot, that we return with the infamous ghost hunting duo, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to come back to work and tackle on their final case where this very evil ghost is haunting a family (the Smural family) later realizing to the warrens that this ghost isn’t a new ghost they haven’t met before, but a ghost that has they have met in the past and is now came back to give them a case that causes them to retire.
This film does bring a satisfying ending to the story of Ed and Lorraine with a good and strong story to this film, but there are some missing pieces that could bring this film to be one of the greatest out there. The pacing of the film is a little slow, mainly talking about the first part about the film where we just get an insight of the families and sometimes it feels unnecessary or maybe even irrelevant to the film. When the film does start to pick up, you do start to sit on the edge of your seat waiting for those scary, eerie, and disturbing moments that may be the whole reason you’re watching this film. I feel like this film does a great job of delivering those moments to you where it gives you the creeps and may make you want you to look away, but there are also some moments where you would expect those scares and moments to come and won’t give you that full impact. When these scenes do play out and as your watching it go down I feel like it is visually appealing and does look good to the naked eye and doesn’t make it look like it look like it was fully CGI, but make it look like it was edited very well and does give you the nasty and disturbed feeling when your watching this film. Moving away from the visuals and the story of the film, we can’t forget about the main stars of the film themselves. The actors do bring a good, emotional, and heartfelt impact to the film mainly with the Warren family and a new character that does involve himself with them and has a good dynamic between them where it reminds you how much you actually love these characters. Not only with the Warrens, but the Smurl family also shows you how much loving family they are but also with that relatable sibling relation we all have. These actors do make you feel attached and feel for them as you see what is happening to them and what challenges are brought throughout the movie with both the Smurl and the Warren family.
With this being the final film to the Conjuring franchise I believe this a solid end to the story of the warrens and their history though ghost hunting. I would give this film a 7/10 with the film delivering a decent story, pretty good acting, and some good and mediocre scares. I think this film is worth it if you are just looking for a good scary movie to watch with your friends or have a scary movie night with your family.
