There are many cafeteria workers all around different schools that not only have to make sure that students eat, but also make sure that the cafeteria is ready for the next day. Cafeteria workers do not get much appreciation for all of the hard work that they do on a daily basis. They make sure that all students are fed, the food is ready for them, and make sure that there is enough food for students to eat.
One of our cafeteria worker, Antoine Bryant, who recently passed his test, becoming a Food Service Senior Worker, had the honor to let our journalism team interview him to talk about his life as a cafeteria worker. He has been working for Hawkins High School ever since the school first opened its doors. He became a cafeteria worker because he loved the idea of cooking and being around food, especially his own mother working for the school district for 20 years, which made him have a great interest as a food service worker.

Cafeteria workers make food for countless students in schools that many people probably wonder how they can handle making so much food very quickly. Antoine has gotten into the flow of making so much food that it becomes natural to him as everyone in the cafeteria have a certain way of doing certain tasks, making it really easy. Every cafeteria workers each have their own way of handling things around the place, making their jobs go by smoothly when making food.
Students and workers get into certain arguments about some problems, and sometimes workers don’t know how to handle it, but for Antoine, due to his extended time working as a food service worker, he knows his ways of dealing with students that are rude. He doesn’t get mad as he doesn’t know what a student is going through, letting certain things fly by him. He tends to apologize towards the student as he doesn’t want to be rude to these students because he loves everyone. Students don’t see how much food service workers genuinely care for the students, as the students rarely communicate with these staff.

Cafeteria workers have to delegate so many tasks that people probably wonder how they can do so much so quickly. Antoine’s duties as a Food Service Senior Worker are to run the floor, makes sure the food is all done, the foods are at the right temperature, makes sure there is enough food and the whole floor running by smoothly. He has so many tasks but due to the fact he has been working for over 15 years, he’s so used to doing everything that he states “he can do it with his eyes closed”.
Cafeteria workers do so much that not many people tend to give them enough love and appreciation for all the hard work they do for a school. Antoine states that he enjoys working at Hawkins. He loves the kids and although he was thinking of retiring a couple of years ago, continuing to make food for all the students makes him want to stay. So the next time you are grabbing food at a cafeteria, think to yourself how much work these cafeteria workers put into making the food that you are able to eat now. Check up on them and see how their day was, maybe they just need someone to ask about their day, considering they rarely get the chance to talk to the students. Appreciate your cafeteria workers for everything they have done for your school.
