Hailey Pena, web editor
Hailey was born on April 3,2008. She is currently a junior at Hawkins. She is class of 2026. This is her first year taking journalism. After graduating high school, she wants to study the career of nursing. She loves doing her makeup that’s why she would also like to take a course to be a MUA ( Make-Up Artist). Hailey likes going out with her friends and enjoys shopping. In the future, she would like to travel a lot more. Hailey loves taking pictures because she can look back at the memories and cherish them forever.

Henry Hernandez (he/they) is a Hawkins High School student entering their senior year. He is talented when it comes to math subjects, quick thinking, and maintaining calm at school. He has gone through his 4 years of highschool maintaining straight A’s & B’s and will keep maintaining this record until he is out of college. He loves to workout in his free time, at the moment he is able to bench 115 which is alright but that is a lot of progress from last week from 100 to 115. He is going to graduate during this year. He plans on going to USC and maintaining straight A’s during his college years so he can get a degree for engineering.

Amber Lerma-Dominguez, photographer/podcast
Amber Lerma-Dominguez, who is in her junior year, enjoys playing video games, reading, and sleeping. She also enjoys long walks when within her sentimental moments, so she walks it off. There are times when she’d like to get out of the house to explore and see what’s more to see, other than what’s around her in her day to day life, one day she’d be able to experience what more to come.

Imani Canada, reporter
Imani Canada is a 16-year-old junior who will graduate in 2026 from Augustus F. Hawkins. She enjoys reading, taking pictures, eating, and painting. She tends to enjoy being at school and playing sports such as flag football and softball. She also enjoys spending time with her friends in and out of school. One thing she dislikes about school, though, is taking tests as she tends to get distracted and panic, but then she ends up getting the grade she wanted. She hopes she can overcome her fear of taking tests to enjoy school more.

Yahairy Mejia, reporter
Yahairy Mejia is a 16-year-old and in the class of 2026. She plans to attend UCLA after graduation to major in business and plans to work as a real estate agent and start her own business one day. She is a junior at Augustus F. Hawkins High School and plans to work hard to achieve her goals. She excelles in mathematics and science. She plans to join a few things this year such as sports and clubs. She enjoys playing many instruments, such as the Guitar, Violin, and the Drums she loves music and spending quality time with her friends, peers and loved ones.

Hans Sam, Photographer/Director
Hans Sam (class of 2025). A young man who chases his goals with determination and is willing to do anything to accomplish them. He is a senior at Augustus F. Hawkins High School. He is someone who is resilient, disciplined and funny. This can be said because most of his friends and people who meet him say he’s a person who is willing to help them with what they need. He likes to help and thinks that being funny is a useful part of life, and thinks that everyone should have a smile on their face. During his free time, you will find him reading, spending quality time with his family, watching movies, also training for football to get that ring for Hawkins High School, or will be working with leadership to oversee school activities and have a better senior class.

Essence Weaver, Reporter, Photographer
Essence Weaver (she/her) is a very involved person. She is a senior (class of 2025) who wants to have a fun year. Once she graduates from Hawkins HS, she wants to major in psychology and early education. She currently works at an early education center. She is also a manager for the boys basketball team and boys football team. She pushes herself to be the best and to do well in all her classes. Although she struggles with home situations, she still manages to show up and put smiles on people’s faces. Essence is very friendly and fun to be around. She is caring, loving, and independent.

Alexandra Gutierrez, Reporter, Director,Photographer, Copy Editor, Newspaper editor, & Equipment Manager
Alexandra Gutierrez is a high school senior (class of 2025) at Augustus F. Hawkins High School in Los Angeles. She is currently doing well in all her academic classes. She is part of the journalism team working as a newspaper editor and photographer. Alexandra has her goal set on attending college after high school. After college, she wants to do either business marketing or computer science.

Fernando Paniagua, Video Editor
Fernando Paniagua attends Augustus F. Hawkins High School in Los, Angeles (CA) as an 11th grader (Class of 2026). He is a student-athlete who has played two years of football and two years of track and field. He enjoys track, but it’s part of the football training program. Besides sports, Fernando also loves playing video games with friends. He is not exactly sure which college he’ll attend, but he would like to attain a degree in kinesiology.
Bryan Diaz, Photographer
Bryan (Class of 2026), uses his love of learning and his ability to adapt to excel in his studies. His future goal is to be a Law Student. Bryan’s mission is to give a voice to those in need in the legal world. Apart from academics, Bryan enjoys listening to music, nature, and sleep.

Mateo Juarez, reporter
Mateo Juarez, a junior (class of 2026) at Augustus F. Hawkins High School, is known for his adaptability in navigating situations that may feel uncomfortable to others. Passionate about personal growth, he consistently works on enhancing his communication skills. A nature enthusiast, Mateo enjoys spending time outdoors, finding inspiration and calm in natural settings. Each semester, he makes a effort to connect with new people, strengthening the sense of community within his school.

Eliezer Arroyo, Photographer
Eliezer Arroyo is 17 and currently on the way to becoming a young success. He has faced so many challenges, but has proved to be resilient. His interest in journalism stemmed from the belief that every person has a unique and interesting story that deserves to be heard, no matter how unimportant the person may seem to society. He aims to showcase stories from a perspective that the world may not see.

Emanuel Rubin, Photographer
Emanuel Rubin (he/him) class of 2025 is a person who is dedicated to good academics in school. He is described as a laid back person with an open mind to new ideas. He isn’t really into books, but when it comes to retaining information he’s more into podcasts. His interests vary from chess (which some people think is boring, but he likes that it makes the other person think) to watching and playing basketball. The music artists who Emanuel mostly listens to are Drake and Schoolboy Q. His plans after high school are to attend college and become an MRI Technologist.

Xariene Valtierra, Photographer
Xariene Valtierra is a student athlete who is in her junior year at Augustus F. Hawkins High School. Xariene spends her free time playing volleyball,baking, and doing schoolwork. She aspires to go to her dream schools; Upenn,UCBerkely,UCLA, or USC to persue a career in chemical engineering. Shes very passionate about the work that she does and strives to do everything she puts her mind to. She knows it wont be easy,but her goal in life is to become an engineer and enviornmental activist to help solve the pollution problem and encourage others to take care of our earth.

Armando Chinchilla, photographer
Armando Chinchilla (class of 2026) is 16 years old and born in Los Angeles California. Some things that he is into are off-roading, cars, trucks and soccer. One of his favorite things to do when offroading is riding his dirt bike in the desert. My mom and dad go with me, but he rides mostly with my cousins, who are a year older. They got him started in the sport. Does he wear special equipment? Just a helmet. Sometimes we spend the night in places like Joshua Tree, Glamis, or California City in tents and RVs. My cousins are about a year older than me and that’s how he got started.

This man’s name is Amari Robinson and he attends Augustus F. Hawkins High School. Facts about him are that he is 16 years old and was born in California. He’s really into sports like basketball and soccer. He plays for a soccer team with his friends. He has 4 siblings, 3 brothers and 1 sister. His dreams/goals are to get into a pro level soccer club or be a content creator. He mostly spends his time playing games or sports with his friends. But, mostly just sleep all day. He is also thinking of going to college for Trade Vocations. He listens to different kinds of music like Rap and R&b but enjoys expanding his music tastes.The day he’s writing this is 3rd day back to school 8/14/2024.

Gabriel Ortuno Castilla, photographer
Gabriel Ortuno Castilla is part of Class 2025 at Augustus Hawkins High School. He’s a part of Leadership, Yearbook, Urban Health Fellow-Ship (UHF), and Journalism. He’s passionate about listening to music and photography. After High school he hopes to attend UC Santa Cruz and study Film & Digital media. He enjoys hanging out with his friends and exploring Los Angeles in his free time. He is always open to helping others and tends to have a positive uplifting spirit.

Jamie “JT” Mena, On Air Talent, Photographer, Journalist, Reporter
Here’s a little intoduction about Jamie Mena. Jamie has truly excelled as the On-Air Talent for the weekly and homeroom announcements, elevating it to an art form that will be difficult for future Hawk anchors to match. Set to graduate in the class of 2025, Jamie is a young Black man with a promising future. He was apart of the 1st Journalism class to be indicted into the Quill and Scroll society at Hawkins High. He’s a student athlete and proactive member in his community but besides being a student athlete and proactive member he’s the CEO of an upcoming fashion brand named So Smoove Apparel created in 2024. A brand built off his confidence in his work and his self confidence as a whole, aside from that he also follows in the footsteps of several of his uncles as he aspires to join the Army. Jamie has had rough patches in the past but he prevailed and is often described by teachers and classmates as inspiring, proactive, and a well-rounded individual destined for success. Jamie exudes self-confidence in all his endeavors and also uses his ability to infuse his peers with energy and laughter serves as a source of personal joy and motivation for others. While he’s not in front of the camera he’s also good behind the camera as he takes photographs of different scenes to perfect his craft both off and on camera. Although this is only a introduction to who Jamie “JT” is but overall Jamie is a young individual that will not only be remembered by his abilities but all his work in the community.

Kaleb Mosley, Artist
Kaleb Mosley was born on September 25, 2008 in Los Angeles, California. He had a strong liking for art ever since he was a little kid. He would draw sketches of popular cartoons at the time like Sponge Bob Square Pants and Bugs Bunny. He dreams of becoming a successful illustrator in graphic novels. His inspiration was the Marvel and DC comics, Diary of a Wimpy Kid and the Captain Underpants series.

Latrice Wright, Reporter
Latrice Wright is a quiet person. She avoids speaking unless spoken to, or if she feels she has to (when no one else talks or when it’s necessary). Latrice is now a Junior in her second year of SRLA. SRLA (Students Run Los Angeles) is a non-profit organization that prepares Los Angeles students for the marathon. Although she couldn’t run the marathon last year due to an injury, she plans to get at least two marathon medals by the end of high school.

Silvia Valladolid, Editor
Silvia Valladolid (she/her) was born on April 12, 2007. She is currently a high school senior at Augustus F. Hawkins High School in Los Angeles. She loves spending her time watching films, solving puzzles, reading, writing, and playing with her cats & dogs while occasionally photographing nature. She would like to describe herself as an open-minded and big-hearted person. She enjoys being in school, grateful to be given the opportunity to consistently expand her knowledge daily. Silvia plans on attending different universities while on her path to becoming a Clinical Psychologist.
