According to LAUSD Substance Use and Mental Health Report” substance abuse starts as early as grade 7 and so this summarizes teen abuse is seventh ninth and eleventh grade in LAUSD. 30 percent of students in LAUSD experienced sadness and a feeling of hopelessness at least once in a year. 15 percent of seventh graders say they considered suicide in the past year. This is sad because they just turned 13 and they want to die. When students are at high risk, they can become victims to other illnesses or worse even drugs. Many of these students have bad attendance and poor grades. The data shows that in the eleventh grade more students had used alcohol or drugs including marijuana and binge drinking. This also includes vaping.
As a student at Hawkins many of us have seen and smelled marijuana and vaping. This illegal activity on campus rather it be to look cool or a cry for help is happening more often. The only way you can participate is if someone intentionally brings drugs onto campus for themselves and for others to use. This could be a problem because you don’t knows what you’re smoking, and it can create an addiction or even worse hospitalization because of the new use of fentanyl laced pills. Fentanyl is a drug that is currently moving through our peers on campus causing hospitalizations and overdosing’s. Narcan is the drug that school’s now having to carry to help students who have overdosed. Narcan. As a teenager if I see someone who looks drugged out, I think it’s important to have Narcan available because you can save a life, and I think living is more important than being on drugs. What do you think?
